SERTPO Updates 2026 Public Participation Plan
The Southeastern Oklahoma Regional Transportation Planning Organization (SERTPO) has approved and released its updated 2026 Public Participation Plan (PPP), outlining how residents, local governments, tribal nations, businesses, and other stakeholders can participate in the regional transportation planning process. The updated plan was approved by the SERTPO Policy Board on May 13, 2026.
The Public Participation Plan serves as SERTPO's roadmap for ensuring transparency, accessibility, and meaningful public involvement in transportation planning across the organization's 17-county region in southeastern Oklahoma. The plan establishes procedures for public meetings, comment periods, outreach efforts, and communication strategies that help residents stay informed and engaged in transportation decisions.
Key Highlights of the 2026 Plan
The updated plan includes:
Public review and comment opportunities for major transportation planning documents.
Open and accessible public meetings in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Expanded use of websites, social media, surveys, and digital communication tools to reach a broader audience.
Strategies to engage traditionally underserved populations, including individuals with disabilities, low-income households, Native American communities, and individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
The plan also details how SERTPO coordinates with local governments, transportation providers, tribal governments, economic development organizations, and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) to ensure transportation planning reflects the needs of the region.
Why Public Participation Matters
Public input plays a critical role in identifying transportation needs, setting priorities, and guiding future investments in roads, bridges, transit services, freight movement, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and other transportation infrastructure throughout southeastern Oklahoma.
By encouraging public participation early and often, SERTPO aims to create a transportation system that is responsive to community needs and supports economic growth, safety, and mobility across the region.
